A dog was rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in an Oak Bay home Thursday afternoon.
Crews were called to the fire at a home in the 900-block of Transit Road at around 3 p.m.
They arrived to find the front side of the house fully engulfed by flames.
The homeowner was the lone occupant of the building and got out on his own without injuries.
Firefighters had to enter the building to rescue the dog, named Cony, anda pet oxygen mask was used to revive it at the scene.
"The dog was unconscious when we got it in the home and pulled it out of the house, so the crew revived the dog," said Oak Bay Fire Chief Dave Cockle. "We make every effort we can, we have oxygen kits on board our fire trucks specifically for pet purposes."
Paramedics said the dog was out of breath and lethargic after being pulled to safety, but seemed to be doing okay.
The animal was transported to a veterinary clinic for treatment, where it's expected to make a full recovery.
The house was completely gutted from the fire. Neighbours said they heard several bangs before it went up in flames.
No word yet on the cause of the fire. An investigation was expected to continue through Thursday night.
