Fire officials are trying to determine what started a fire at a commercial marijuana grow op just outside Nanaimo over the weekend.

The North Cedar Fire Department responded to the blaze at 2111 Holden Corso Road in Cedar around 5:40 a.m. on Saturday.

The fire spread to three buildings and three transport trailers on the property, fire chief Percy Tipping says.

He added that there were a number of challenges with fighting the blaze, access being one.

There’s a large power feed to the complex and electrical lines had melted and fallen to the ground, according to Tipping.

The fire department will look at the next steps on Monday.

The fire chief said the dollar value of the damage will be ‘significant for sure.’
