A car was seen fleeing the scene of a small wildfire near Cedar, B.C. Monday believed to be caused by an illegal bonfire that got out of control.

Firefighters responded to a call about a fast-moving bush fire at around 11 a.m.

They arrived to find freshly cut wood and burned out furniture – evidence pointing to the fire being the latest human-caused blaze on Vancouver Island.

“People that reported the fire saw a car leaving here and they got the plate number and I believe it’s been forwarded on to the RCMP,” said Cranberry Fire Dept. Chief Ron Guillette.

It’s just the latest in a string of human-caused wildfires, including a blaze on Otter Point Road in Sooke that forced evacuations.

Some reported the fire was caused by a bear banger, a type of flare used to scare off bears.

Meanwhile, the human-caused blaze at Lizard Lake near Port Renfrew continues to burn, reaching 400 hectares in size Monday.

That wildfire is now 65 per cent contained, according to officials.
