A bush fire in Sooke forced several families from their homes Sunday night, but crews managed to save all the threatened properties.

The blaze was small, but was burning in challenging terrain and Otter Point Fire Chief Kevan Brehart said crews had to build their own trails to reach burning undergrowth on cliff faces and in steep, rocky terrain.

Some residents took refuge in the Sooke Community Hall during the five hour battle.

A cause of the fire is under investigation.
