Health officials say a record 423 people received a life-saving organ transplant in B.C. last year.

The number of deceased organ donors is also up for a second year in a row, from 95 in 2015 to 97 last year, which the province credits to a push from health-care staff across B.C. and increasing public awareness and support.

B.C.'s deceased organ donation rate is now 20.32 donors per million population, which is above the Canadian national rate of 18.2 donors per million.

However, officials say more than 600 British Columbians are still waiting for an organ.
