Scorching heat is settling in over the Prairies including southern Manitoba. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a yellow warning for heat on Wednesday for much of the southwest, including Brandon, south-central regions and the southern Red River Valley. A ridge of high pressure has effectively created a heat dome. Daytime highs will climb into the 30s, and with nowhere for the warm air to escape, overnight lows will remain in the upper teens for the rest of the week. Winnipeg is not under the heat warning on Wednesday, but will likely be included soon. Temperatures will reach the upper 20s today, before rocketing into the mid-30s on Thursday. But whether a heat warning is in effect or not, take proper precautions to protect yourself and loved ones, including pets, from the heat. That should also include protection from the sun. It is expected to shine throughout the hot weather into next week. The UV index is climbing higher now that the rays of the sun are strengthening as summer approaches. Meanwhile, most of northern Manitoba will see sunshine and warm temperatures in the low 20s on Wednesday. However, The Pas could experience smoky conditions. The northernmost areas will be cloudier and somewhat cooler, with highs in the mid to upper teens. To the east, the sun will also shine over northwestern Ontario, where temperatures will rise to the low to mid-20s on Wednesday afternoon.
