Windsor Jewish Film Festival returns with lighter mix after years of heavier themes

The Windsor Jewish Film Festival is back in downtown Windsor for its 23rd year, with organizers promising a mix of drama, comedy, documentary and lighter storytelling after several years of heavier themes.

The festival runs from May 31 to June 4, 2026, at The Capitol Theatre on University Avenue West.

Opening day includes an afternoon of films, a gala and the opening night film, ‘Guns and Moses,’ which lead coordinator Miriam Cedroni described as a “total popcorn crime thriller.”

Cedroni, who is also an event and program manager and social media director at the Jewish Federation and Community Centre, said the festival is meant to appeal to more than one audience.

“It is a Jewish film festival, but it’s also just a film festival,” Cedroni said. “It’s great stories, it’s compelling, interesting storytelling. It’s a great way to learn about other people, different experiences, build empathy.”

She said the festival also gives people a chance to gather in person and experience a story together.

“To have a moment of catharsis, sitting in a dark room, laughing and experiencing something with your fellow human being,” she said.

This year’s lineup includes powerful dramas, heartfelt comedies and eye-opening documentaries, with organizers inviting audiences to “experience a world of storytelling that has something for everyone.”

Cedroni said the festival also provides a platform for Jewish voices and Jewish storytelling.

“We’re a micro minority,” she said. “So, it’s kind of interesting and obviously complicated, the past few years, politically.”

While some films may still touch on difficult subjects, Cedroni said audiences can expect a broader range of tones this year.

“In previous years, I think particularly in the last few, we’ve leaned quite dark,” she said. “I think this year you’re going to see a larger mix of comedy and more broad storytelling.”

Cedroni said that shift comes after a period of challenging conversations and emotional subject matter.

“I think we’re a little tired of feeling sad and having a hard time and having really difficult discussions,” she said. “Not that you won’t find those in there, but I think you’re going to find more of a balance this year.”

The Windsor Jewish Film Festival continues until Thursday at The Capitol Theatre.
