Weeks of heavy rain have delayed construction of the Energy City Metro Ballpark, home to Spruce Grove’s Cactus Rats. In a post to social media Sunday, the baseball club confirmed that no further games will be held at the park for the remainder of the season after discussions with the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) “There is no longer a meaningful opportunity to achieve additional public fan occupancy before the season ends,” said the post. “Continuing to host games at the site would maintain construction restrictions without providing fans access to the ballpark.” The Cactus Rats said the rainy summer was a contributing factor to construction delays. “Persistent heavy rainfall significantly reduced the sustained dry-weather windows required to complete the concourse membrane, a critical sequential requirement for fan occupancy,” said the club. “Despite continued efforts to adjust the construction sequence, we were unable to complete the work and required approvals in time for public attendance this season.” Season-ticket holders will receive credit toward 2027 Cactus Rats games. The ballpark opened with a capacity of 150 people in June, just enough for players and team personnel. No fans were permitted in the park as large portions of the building were largely unfinished. Construction of the ballpark began in 2023.
