Sikh celebrations draw thousands to enjoy festivities, food and traditions

Celebrations of Sikh heritage brought thousands to Windsor’s waterfront on Sunday afternoon.

While Khalsa Day is a celebration of the Sikh New Year, in Windsor, it’s also become an invitation to the entire community to participate.

Most years, Amar, a Detroit resident, travels over the border to take in the festivities.

“It’s just a good day to participate in the community building. And we spread the message of oneness,” she said.

“We all are connected, and we are all one family of humanity.”

Across Riverside Drive, a parade stretched down the road, with participants showcasing their traditions.

Amar noted that the annual event is often well-attended by people who live stateside.

“We are again saying that everyone is welcome to participate in the community celebrations,” she added.

Under dozens of white tents, volunteers served the masses to ensure everyone was fed and hydrated.

“So everybody has taken responsibility of their stall,” said Harman Wahid, who helped serve food.

“There’s different types of food, different types of drinks and juices. And, you know, it’s a team effort.”

Regardless of their background, everyone was welcomed and offered food. Through donations of time, money and supplies, Wahid said the event is centred on giving back to the community.

“We just want to share about the awareness of our community, and the inclusivity of the community,” he added.
