For people living along B.C.’s remote central coast, the ferry is more than a way to get from one community to another, it can be a vital link to the outside world. Now, that link is being disrupted for weeks. B.C. Ferries has extended a series of cancellations between Port Hardy, Bella Coola and several mid-Coast communities through Sept. 7 as a vessel undergoes repairs. The cancellations affect sailings between Bear Cove in Port Hardy, Bella Coola, Bella Bella, Shearwater and Ocean Falls, disrupting a route relied on by residents, travellers and businesses along the coast. B.C. Ferries says the problem involves the vessel’s stern tube shaft seal. The company has secured dry dock space for the repairs but says the timing of that availability and the work required mean additional sailings must be cancelled. The latest cancellations begin Aug. 29, when the 7:30 a.m. sailing from Port Hardy to Bella Coola will not operate. Service between the communities will remain disrupted into September, with further cancellations scheduled through Sept. 7. For those affected, B.C. Ferries says refunds for cancelled bookings will be issued automatically. Customers who want to change their travel plans can contact the ferry operator to reschedule. Reserved customers affected by the cancellations may also qualify for compensation, with receipts required for consideration. The ferry operator is also looking for another way to keep people moving. B.C. Ferries says it is sourcing a foot-passenger-only water taxi to provide additional service to mid-coast ports. Details will be released once arrangements are in place. Until then, travellers are being urged to check the latest sailing information before making their way to the terminal. The cancellations are expected to create an especially significant challenge for communities where marine transportation plays a central role in connecting people, goods and services. B.C. Ferries says it understands the impact the disruption will have and is working to minimize the effect while repairs are completed.
