Truck driver arrested after driving wrong way on Trans-Canada Highway

According to police, the truck was heading north in lanes meant for southbound vehicles when officers were dispatched to the area.

A commercial truck driver was arrested after allegedly travelling in the wrong direction on the Trans-Canada Highway near Langford early Saturday morning.

West Shore RCMP say officers were called around 4:40 a.m. on June 13 after multiple drivers reported a transport truck travelling against traffic near the Helmcken Road interchange.

According to police, the truck was heading north in lanes meant for southbound vehicles when officers were called to the area.

Police found the truck and tried to stop it. The truck did not pull over immediately but eventually came to a stop near the Leigh Road exit.

The 52-year-old driver, from the Vancouver area, was arrested as officers investigated the incident. Police say confusion appears to have contributed to the driver’s actions and said drug or alcohol impairment were not factors.

No crashes or injuries were reported.

The truck was towed from the scene, and the driver was later issued violation tickets for driving without due care and attention and failing to stop for police.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police say the file is also being referred to Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement and the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles for further review.
