Calgary Flames co-owner Alvin Libin dies at 95

The Calgary Flames and their ownership group are mourning the death of longtime partner Alvin Libin.

Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC) said Monday that Libin, who was born in 1931 and joined the ownership group in 1994, played a key role in the organization’s growth and development over more than three decades.

In a statement, CSEC board chairman N. Murray Edwards described Libin as “a great partner and friend,” adding his passion for the Flames and other teams was “second to none.”

CSEC president Robert Hayes said Libin’s vision and generosity helped shape both the organization and the broader community.

During his tenure, Libin was involved in the expansion of CSEC’s portfolio, including the acquisition of the Calgary Stampeders, Calgary Hitmen and Calgary Roughnecks, as well as the relocation of the Wranglers to Calgary.

He also contributed to the development of the city’s new Scotia Place arena project.

Libin was an officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Alberta Order of Excellence.
