A driver fled the scene after a man was struck in downtown Nanaimo early Sunday morning, and police are now asking the public for help finding the vehicle involved. The collision happened around 1:48 a.m. at the intersection of Albert and Dunsmuir streets, according to Nanaimo RCMP. Police, paramedics and Nanaimo Fire Rescue came to the scene after receiving multiple reports of a pedestrian being hit. The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died. “Witnesses reported that the vehicle involved left the area immediately following the collision,” Nanaimo RCMP said in a statement. The RCMP’s General Investigation Section is leading the case, with a collision analyst and the BC Coroners Service involved. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area between 1:40 and 1:50 a.m. Aug. 16 to come forward.
