Juan de Fuca Marine Trail reopens: What hikers need to know before hitting the trail

One of Vancouver Island’s most celebrated hiking destinations is welcoming visitors back.

After more than a year of storm-related closures, the entire 47-kilometre Juan de Fuca Marine Trail officially reopened on Canada Day, giving hikers and backcountry campers access once again to the rugged stretch of coastline between China Beach and Botanical Beach.

The reopening marks the return of one of British Columbia’s premier coastal hiking experiences after extensive repairs to damage caused by powerful fall and winter storms.

While the trail is now fully open, BC Parks says crews will continue minor repairs and trail clearing throughout the summer. Visitors should expect the occasional delay and follow any signs or directions from park staff.

The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail isn’t your average hike.

The route winds through old-growth rainforest, across suspension bridges, over rocky shoreline and along steep coastal bluffs overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It’s a demanding backcountry trek that rewards hikers with waterfalls, beaches, dramatic ocean views and abundant wildlife.

For those not planning the full multi-day adventure, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the park.

Mystic Beach remains one of the Island’s most photographed destinations thanks to its waterfall that spills onto the beach. Sombrio Beach continues to be a favourite for surfers and visitors searching for its hidden canyon waterfall, while Botanical Beach offers world-famous tide pools teeming with marine life during low tide.

BC Parks is reminding visitors that those delicate ecosystems need to stay that way.

Touching or removing marine life, harvesting shellfish or disturbing tide pools is prohibited, and visitors are encouraged to admire the area’s incredible biodiversity without leaving a trace.

Anyone heading onto the Marine Trail should come prepared. BC Parks says hikers can expect muddy and slippery conditions, uneven terrain and rapidly changing coastal weather. Visitors are also reminded the park is home to black bears and cougars, making proper food storage and wildlife awareness essential.

Backcountry camping has also resumed along the trail, with permits available online or at designated trailheads.

For thousands of hikers every year, the reopening means one of Vancouver Island’s signature outdoor adventures is finally back.
