Grizzly bear spotted on northern Vancouver Island, residents urged to be cautious

A grizzly bear was sighted within the village of Sayward, B.C., on Monday, prompting a warning for residents to exercise extreme caution.

Officials say sightings like this are rare, but not unheard of.

WildSafeBC advises people not to approach the bear. Anyone who encounters it is advised to stay calm, back away slowly, and do not run, especially at dawn and dusk when bears are more active.

Officials are also stressing the importance of prevention. Residents are reminded to secure things that attract wildlife, including garbage, food and bird feeders. Children and pets should be supervised closely while the bear remains in the area.
