One person was found dead and three others were taken to hospital following two residential fires in Winnipeg. At 1:24 p.m. Friday, firefighters were called to a two-storey apartment building in the 400 block of Ross Avenue in the Centennial neighbourhood. When crews arrived, heavy black smoke was coming from the building. Firefighters entered the structure and attacked the fire from inside, bringing it under control at 1:57 p.m. First responders found one person in the suite where the fire started. The person was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported. The city’s emergency social services team was called to provide temporary support for evacuated residents. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and Winnipeg Police Service are investigating the fire. Flora Avenue fire At 3:14 a.m. Saturday, crews were called to a two-storey house in the 500 block of Flora Avenue in the Dufferin neighbourhood. Initial reports indicated people might be trapped inside, the city said. When crews arrived, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the house. Firefighters rescued three people trapped inside. Paramedics took all three to hospital — one in unstable condition and two in stable condition. Firefighters attacked the blaze from inside and brought it under control at 3:40 a.m. The fire remains under investigation. No damage estimates were available for both fires.
