Off-leash dog lured, killed by wolves in Ucluelet, B.C. conservation officers say

Conservation officers issued a warning for pet owners Tuesday after a dog was killed by wolves in the Ucluelet area.

They say wolves lured the off-leash dog in a well-used walking area and killed it.

“This incident highlights the real and immediate risk to pets, and potential safety concerns for the public,” the B.C. Conservation Officer Service wrote in a social media post.

The BCCOS, RCMP and District of Ucluelet are investigating the incident.

Officials urged residents and visitors to keep their dogs on a leash and avoid walking their pets in the Wyndansea Resort area entirely.

They also advised to stay on well-travelled paths, remain alert, carry noise makers “where appropriate” and not to let pets roam or run ahead.

“Wolves are intelligent predators and may use tactics such as luring domestic animals. They can travel large distances in search of prey and typically avoid urban environments, but this behaviour can change,” officers wrote. “Your awareness and caution can help prevent further incidents.”
