Some North Shore residents will head to the polls on Monday in one of three federal byelections taking place Aug. 31 to fill vacant seats in the House of Commons. The seat representing North Vancouver-Capilano in Ottawa is up for grabs following the resignation of 11-year Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who is now Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. The Liberal Party of Canada currently holds 171 seats, just one shy of a majority in Parliament. Byelections are also being held in the ridings of Chicoutimi-Le Fjord in Quebec and Beaches-East York in Ontario. Candidates For the Conservatives, lawyer Stephen Curran is running a second time. He was defeated by Wilkinson in the 2025 election, who received just under 60 per cent of the vote. The Liberal candidate is Braeden Caley, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s former deputy chief of staff. Stephen Tweedale is the NDP candidate, Shelley Luce is running for the Greens, as well as Ehsan Arjmand for the People’s Party of Canada and Jeff Monds as an Independent. How to vote Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday. Registered voters should have received a card with the location of their local polling station, but those who did not receive one or are not registered to vote can find the location online. In order to vote in the byelection, you must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen, and a resident of the North Vancouver-Capilano riding since July 26.
