A wildlife rescue organization on Vancouver Island is celebrating the release of a fawn that had spent nearly two months with a car mirror stuck on its leg. MARS Wildlife Rescue posted on social media Friday that it had been receiving calls about the young deer on Cumberland Road in Courtenay for several weeks. “We made over 10 rescue attempts with no success in catching the little guy,” the post reads. “But our luck changed. We got a call recently from a homeowner in that area who had managed to trap this fawn in his enclosed yard.” Within 20 minutes, the rescue team had dispatched members to the site to assist the injured animal. MARS said its crew removed the mirror on-site to assess the level of damage to the fawn’s leg, then brought the animal into the organization’s care. “A thorough clean of the wound and a successful wound closure meant we could get this very stressed fawn back out where it belonged as soon as possible,” the post reads. “He was incredibly lucky that the wounds underneath were relatively minor considering how long it had been on there, and with the proper medical attention and quick actions of all involved, we were able to save the foot and reunite him with his family in the wild.” The organization thanked everyone who took part in the rescue effort, as well as the community members who reported the fawn to it.
