A Saskatoon man who shot and killed another man has been handed a nine-year prison sentence. Katlim Desjarlais-Kelly, 24, was charged in the death of 48-year-old Arden Panipekeesick. Panipekeesick was pronounced dead on Feb. 10, 2024, inside his home at 238 Avenue K North. Court heard the two men exchanged gunfire. A bullet struck Panipekeesick in the neck after passing through a door frame. The central issue at trial was intent. The defence argued Desjarlais-Kelly acted in self-defence when he fired the gun. The Crown maintained he pulled the trigger with the intent to kill. A 12-person jury found Desjarlais-Kelly not guilty of second-degree murder, but guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter. Justice Krista Zerr sentenced Desjarlais-Kelly to eight years for manslaughter, plus one year for possessing a firearm while prohibited. With credit for time already spent in custody, Desjarlais-Kelly has just over five years left to serve.
