A fire broke out at an apartment building in New Westminster early Sunday morning, forcing residents and pets to be evacuated. Deputy Chief Jeff Romanyk, with New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services, said crews were called to the building on Agnes Street around 3:30 a.m. after a fire broke out on a balcony and “worked its way into the roof structure.” No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. “It’s Thanksgiving weekend so a lot of people were away,” Romanyk said. Firefighters were still working to bring the blaze under control roughly six hours after it began, and Romanyk said it remains to be seen when or whether anyone will be able to return. TransLink reported a number of buses were being detoured and the public was asked to avoid the area while firefighters were on scene.
