Pets deserted in boxes, crates: BC SPCA warns against animal abandonment

More than 2,000 stray animals have been taken in by the BC SPCA so far this year, prompting the agency to remind pet owners that abandoning animals is against the law in this province.

The organization says in the past few months, it’s seen several cases involving animals deserted in boxes or crates, left in parks or near animal centres.

“While each of these situations is different, one thing feels clear: someone was trying to give their animal a chance at a new life when they realized they couldn’t provide for them,” the SPCA said in a July 3 bulletin.

However, the agency stresses that leaving animals at a gate or in a park puts them in danger and a state of incredible stress.

“They could be exposed to heat or cold, wildlife or traffic. Even a short amount of time can put them at risk,” the bulletin reads.

The list also includes a group of seven-week-old Staffordshire bull terrier puppies left inside a crate outside the gate of an animal centre.

A taped-up box with two cats and a pair of kittens inside was also found on the doorsteps of another animal centre.

“The good news? Every one of these animals received a second chance,” the SPCA wrote in its bulletin.

The agency tells CTV News that it took more than 5,130 stray animals into care in 2025.

The organization notes that under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, animals that are apparently ownerless, found straying or left behind in rental units are considered abandoned, though all are tracked as stray animals in its data.

Guidelines for pet owners who need to surrender their animal are available on the BC SPCA’s website.

According to the agency, surrendering pets through the proper process ensures their safety while speeding up the adoption process, as well as any necessary medical treatment.

Access to short-term support, including temporary care and pet food bank services, is also available through the BC SPCA.

“During a moment of desperation, we encourage all animal guardians to make the most compassionate choice,” the bulletin concludes.
