NDP already held a majority of seats in the legislature. Critics accused Eby of political opportunism, arguing the move was an attempt to shore up his party’s power by capitalizing on chaos withing the B.C. Conservative Party. The NDP leader defended the snap election call as necessary to deal with the “existential threat” of U.S. President Donald Trump and his trade war, while also painting the opposition as unfit to govern.
