Calgary police say a man hit and killed along northbound Deerfoot Trail on Tuesday is the eighth pedestrian death in the city this year. Police say the 70-year-old victim was outside of a pickup truck and trailer parked on the right shoulder of the road, south of 17 Avenue S.E., just after 1 p.m. He was hit by a northbound truck towing a trailer as it crossed into the shoulder. Police say the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward says they aren’t sure why the victim was outside of the vehicle when he was hit. “We think there was a mechanical defect, but we don’t know at this stage.” The driver, a man in his 30s, wasn’t hurt. The victim is Calgary’s 31st traffic fatality of 2026. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has dash-cam footage is asked to call police at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
