A man who is already behind bars in B.C. for murder has been sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter with a firearm in a separate “senseless” killing, according to authorities. Chad Colivas, who was 41 when he was fatally shot, was unarmed when he “confronted” a man who broke into his home in Abbotsford in March of 2022, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said in an update on the case Thursday. Colivas had no links to criminal or gang activity, according to police. Over a year later, 22-year-old Tanner Fox was charged with second-degree murder in the case, police said. Fox pleaded guilty to the lesser offence earlier this year, and was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years, with no credit for time served. “The victim was only 41 years old when his life was taken away due to a senseless act of violence,” said IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong, in the statement. “While the sentencing does not change that fact, we hope it represents a step forward for his loved ones as they continue their healing process.” A woman who was arrested at the same time as Fox, and originally charged with manslaughter, pleaded guilty to break-and-enter, police said. Last year, Laetitia Acera was sentenced to four years in prison, which worked out to an additional 14 months after credit for time served, according to IHIT. Fox, the statement from IHIT noted, is serving a life sentence for the killing of former Air India bombing suspect Ripudaman Singh Malik. Malik was gunned down outside his Surrey business in July of 2022. Fox and his co-accused, Jose Lopez, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and will be ineligible for parole for 20 years. The court heard the two men were hired to kill Malik, but have never revealed who paid them to carry out the murder. With files from The Canadian Press
