N.S. man charged with child sexual abuse, police believe there may be more victims

A 67-year-old Pictou County man is facing charges following a child sexual abuse investigation and police believe there may be other victims.

The RCMP launched an investigation in April after a social media platform reported that someone was transmitting child sexual abuse and exploitation material through its service.

Police executed a search warrant at a home on Glen Road East in Central Caribou, N.S., on Wednesday. The RCMP says the officers seized electronic devices and firearms.

Steven Frederick Nelson, 67, of Central Caribou has been charged with the following offences:

• two counts of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material
• transmitting child sexual abuse and exploitation material
• unlicensed possession of a firearm
• unsafe storage of a firearm

Nelson has been remanded into custody. He’s due back in court on Tuesday.

“Investigators believe additional victims, who are now adults, may’ve been targeted by Nelson dating back several years,” said the RCMP in a news release Thursday.

“Anyone who believes they may’ve been victimized by Nelson is encouraged to contact police. There’s no time limit on reporting sexual offences.”

Police say anyone who encounters suspected child sexual abuse or exploitation material in Nova Scotia is required to report it. Those who fail to do so could be penalized under the Child and Family Services Act.
