Volunteers with the Royal Canadian Marine Search & Rescue were kept busy over the Thanksgiving weekend after a sailboat ran aground off Gabriola Island.

The mayday call came in on Sunday around 3:45 p.m.

According to officials, a sailboat with three people onboard ran aground near Silva Bay.

A SAR crew out of Nanaimo responded with two fast response vessels and another crew out of Ladysmith also assisted in the incident.

The Canadian Coast Guard sent a hovercraft from the Vancouver airport.

All three passengers on the boat were rescued and the sailboat was towed back into Silva Bay.
