Sask. gets the latest wave of wintery weather

WATCH: Saskatchewan residents are getting the full cross-section of seasonal weather today, running from freezing rain down south to strong winds and fresh snow

It’s just under two weeks before winter officially arrives, but mother nature put much of the province through a full preview on Tuesday.

From rain and above-zero temperatures to strong winds and fresh snow — it’s a mixed bag and it look like residents are taking the first real taste of the season in stride.

That fresh wave of wintry weather swept across central Saskatchewan early Tuesday, with many areas getting dumped on.

“We had one report of a quick five centimeters in, Saskatoon, which later lightened to light snow,” Danielle Desjardins with Environment and Climate Change Canada told CTV News.

This system brought enough snow to wreak havoc on highways.

In southern Saskatchewan on Tuesday, earlier rainfall transitioned into snow in several areas.

The Highway Hotline cautioned drivers spanning from Swift Current to Estevan that travel was not recommended on many of the roadways in and out of their communities, with slush, ice and wet drifting snow making for a risky commute.

RCMP issued an advisory Tuesday afternoon warning about the impact on driving:

“Reduced road conditions continue to impact driving conditions in the southern parts of Saskatchewan. Between 12:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on December 9, 2025, Saskatchewan RCMP received 47 reports of weather-related calls for service in Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction, which includes collisions and vehicles stuck on roadways or ditches.”

The white stuff also kept shovels moving.

“I go down there and make a pass for the mailman so that he can get in here,” Bryan Conway said. Adding, he’s an unofficial snow angel for his side of the block.

Farther south, earlier rainfall transitioned into snow in several areas. Some highways faced temporary closures.

Despite the challenges, many residents say they’re finding ways to enjoy it. Max and his brother were out in the King George area enjoying the snow in front of their house.

“Sledding is the best. It’s not so cold,” he said.

“It could be colder. I already broke the big shovel so we got the little, tiny guy out, and I’m going to dig my jeep out now so I can plug it in on the cold weekend,” said Claire Peacock, who was shoveling her sidewalk.

The cold weather Peacock mentioned is expected to start Thursday, with strong winds making those numbers feel even more extreme and windchills could push into the minus 40s across much of southern Saskatchewan, including Saskatoon.

“By Thursday afternoon, that’s when we’re going to really see temperatures plummet. We’re expecting overnight lows well into the minus 20s and then for the weekend, those temperatures fall even further,” Desjardins said.
