Saskatchewan Roughriders star Kian Schaffer-Baker is aiming to become the fifth consecutive Rider to win a prestigious CFL award. Schaffer-Baker is the Roughriders’ nominee for the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award, which the CFL says “recognizes a Canadian CFL player who best demonstrates the attributes of Canada’s veterans - strength, perseverance, courage, comradeship and contribution to Canadian communities.” A Roughrider has claimed the award each of the last four years, with Dan Clark winning in 2022, followed by Brayden Lenius in 2023, Jorgen Hus in 2024 and Logan Ferland last season. “Schaffer-Baker has established himself as one of Saskatchewan’s most reliable receivers and one of the CFL’s most respected ambassadors,” the CFL said in a media release announcing the nine nominees. “Schaffer-Baker leads by example through energy and positivity, while building strong relationships throughout the Roughriders organization. Off the field, he is deeply committed to supporting young people across Saskatchewan.” The Roughriders wideout has visited 19 schools while also travelling to northern communities through the Santa in the North program. The Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award has been presented annually since 2010. It’s named in honour of the distinguished Second World War veteran, who went on to become the CFL’s longest-serving Commissioner. The winner will be chosen by a panel of voters, including current CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston. Award winners this year will be honoured with surprise presentations near the end of the regular season and during the postseason.
