These are the Sask. communities hit hardest during Thursday’s extreme winds

Saskatchewan will see heavy rain and wind continuing into late evening, with more showers expected Friday. Sabeen Ahmad has your full forecast.

Downed power lines, dust storms and driving rain were just some conditions faced by those across southern Saskatchewan on Thursday.

A strong low-pressure system approached the province from the west and brought stormy conditions right across Saskatchewan.

Much of the damage, including extensive power outages, was caused by extreme winds.

Preliminary data from Environment Canada and Saskatchewan Fire weather stations show that Radville, Sask. recorded the strongest wind gust of the day at 115 km/h.

Climax recorded a gust at 109 km/h while Milestone, Coronach, and Swift Current all recorded 107 km/h. Similarly, Estevan, Yellow Grass, Val Marie all recorded 106 km/h.

Other communities on the list of the most windblown included:

• Shaunavon 100 km/h
• Regina 98 km/h
• Assiniboia 94 km/h
• Kindersley 93 km/h
• Moose Jaw 91 km/h
• North Battleford 89 km/h
• Leader 89 km/h

As of 10 a.m. Friday, wind alerts remain active in Saskatchewan’s southeast corner – between Estevan and the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border.

Wind gusts of up to 90 km/h are expected to last until Friday afternoon.

Additionally, a special weather statement is active for a large swath of northern Saskatchewan including La Ronge, Pelican Narrows, Buffalo Narrows and Île-à-la-Crosse. Snowfall of two to five centimetres is possible throughout the day.

Precipitation is expected to quit by Friday evening.
