Sask. partners with #NotInMyCity initiative to provide training to combat human trafficking

The Government of Saskatchewan is working to provide human trafficking training to law enforcement agencies in the province by partnering with the #NotInMyCity initiative.

Founded by Canadian country singer Paul Brandt in 2017, the #NotInMyCity initiative works to build alliances to prevent and end human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Through the National Action Plan to End Gender-based Violence, the province is providing $100,000 to have investigators with the International Association of Human Trafficking deliver specialized training to RCMP, municipal police, marshals, highway transportation officers, and Indigenous police services.

The training, which will focus on strengthening investigative capacity, victim-centered practices, and inter-agency coordination for frontline officers, will be delivered in the fall.

In 2025, the province hosted #NotInMyCity’s Maddison Sessions Conference in Saskatoon, which provided a forum for law enforcement to discuss solutions to human trafficking.

The Maddison Sessions is named in honour of Maddison Fraser, who lost her life as a victim of human trafficking in Alberta, according to the province. The #NotInMyCity initiative launched the first Maddison Session in 2023 in Lake Louise, Alta., and the second in Kelowna, B.C. in 2024.

“The funding being provided here and the training it will deliver are a continuation of that relationship and a firm example of the work Saskatchewan is undertaking to eliminate human trafficking in our province,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Tim McLeod said in a news release from the province.
