AgriStability changes see support from Saskatchewan’s livestock producers

Saskatchewan updates AgriStability program to help producers manage rising input costs, including grazing rent and feed inventory adjustments.

The AgriStability Program is intended to be a financial safety net for producers when their income drops significantly. Now, new changes have been made to better support ranchers.

“Saskatchewan producers know their operations best and strong risk management programs need to reflect that reality,” said David Marit, Saskatchewan’s agriculture minister. “This AgriStability Program enhancement [has led to] better recognition feed costs and pasture use, provide[s] more meaningful and responsive support for our livestock producers.”

Beginning this year, the costs associated with renting or the lease of pastureland for grazing will be considered an allowable expense under the AgriStability program.

“It’s a positive step forward for the beef industry. For years, our biggest expense was not counted in AgriStability,” said Jeff Yorga, the president of Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association.

“Our own grazing is still not counted. That’s something we’re going to continue to work with the government on to try and include in the future,” he added.

AgriStability is also adjusting the feed inventory pricing for livestock producers. This accounts for feed destined to be used on the farm and not sold.

“Drought is always a concern. We definitely are seeing a lot more volatility in the weather lately,” said Joleen Shae, the vice charge of the Saskatchewan Cattle Association.

“As an organization, we continue to lobby for risk programs that can help our producers try to mitigate some effects of the drought,” she concluded.

Yorga said the age of cattle producers is rising compared to other commodity groups. This year’s is likely due to a number of factors including risk management.

These new options could help cattle producers when disaster strikes.

“Given current pricing in the livestock business. Now is the first time in the history of AgriStability where producers have a chance to build a margin,” said Yorga.

“You need to build a margin before you can lose a margin. Producers are in the position to build a positive margin in AgriStability so that if there is a crash they can be protected,” he concluded.

The deadline to enroll in the AgriStability program is April 30.
