A pilot was taken to hospital after the unique aircraft they were flying experienced a hard landing at Victoria International Airport Monday afternoon.

An airport spokesman said emergency personnel and mutual aid were called in after the private aircraft made a hard landing between two runways at around 12:30 p.m.

The pilot received medical attention from first responders at the landing site before being taken to hospital. The Transportation Safety Board later confirmed the pilot suffered minor injuries.

The TSB also confirmed the aircraft is actually an autogryo, which is similar to a helicopter but its main horizontal rotor is not powered.

A TSB spokesman said it's the first time in the decade he's been on the job that he's seen a hard landing involving an autogyro. The agency is still gathering information on the incident.

Two runways were temporarily closed but the airport's director of operaitons and safety Ken Gallant said operations weren't majorly affected.
