Shelter-in-place remains in effect in M’Chigeeng First Nation

Reports of an armed suspect prompted police to declare a shelter-in-place order in M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island. (OPP graphic)

Police have narrowed the shelter-in-place area in M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island to near Mnaawnkwad Drive and Riverside Drive, Ontario Provincial Police said Friday afternoon.

The affected area now includes Riverside Drive, after earlier reports had included Hall Street and Corbiere Street. The OPP is being assisted by the United Chiefs & Councils of Manitoulin Anishnaabe Police Service.

“Police are actively responding to an incident involving a potentially armed individual in the area,” OPP said in an updated news release Friday.

Anyone near the areas who is outside should “seek shelter immediately in a secure location,” police said.

“If you are inside, lock all doors and windows, and close curtains or blinds to avoid drawing attention. Do not approach or engage with anyone suspicious. Call 911 immediately if you see or encounter the possibly armed individual.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to call OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and should not pick up hitchhikers.

“If you are driving in or through this area, please proceed directly to your destination and do not make any additional stops,” police said.

“Individuals not currently in the affected area are requested to avoid travelling there until further notice. An increased police presence can be expected while officers continue their response and investigation.”

Further information will be released as it becomes available, police said.
