Mining company evicts tenants from Timmins mobile home park

A mining company in Timmins, Ont., is evicting more than 70 mobile trailer owners from a park, leaving them wondering where they will soon be living.

Mining company Discovery Silver is evicting more than 70 mobile home owners from Fairway Village in Timmins, Ont.

Resident Alexis Hodson-Turpin said she received the news Jan. 16. It was a shock, she said.

“We got a knock on the door and an envelope was delivered with an eviction notice to the people of Fairway Village — in the middle of winter,” said Hodson-Turpin.

She and her wife have lived in Fairway Village for 39 years, and over the decades, she said that the park had several owners.

“Every time somebody came on, we asked the question, ‘Are you getting rid of us?’” said Hodson-Turpin.

“This is the first company that I didn’t ask — and it’s kind of sad that I should have asked, and I didn’t.”

CTV News requested an interview with Discovery Silver, but the company provided a statement instead:

“In just over two years, by Jan. 31, 2028, Dome Mine Ltd. plans to convert the Fairway Village location to non-residential use,” the statement said.

“This action is necessary as we plan additional growth initiatives that will contribute to job creation, new business opportunities for local suppliers and investments in the Timmins community. As a result, we have informed residents of Fairway Village that, by the end of January 2028, we will need to end their tenancy.

“In addition to providing as much lead time as possible (over two years), we are also working with tenants to assist them with the transition, offering financial compensation, including the option of selling their mobile homes to us, and connecting them with other mobile home operators in the area to help them find new accommodations.”

But Hodson-Turpin said finding a new place to live will take considerable time.

“We can’t find out anything in the wintertime,” she said.

“We’d have to wait until the spring to find out ... whether they can actually move this home … they would buy the trailer at a third-party cost, which probably would bring down the value of your trailer. They’re offering us $10,000 to move out, but I don’t think that’s going to be enough for us.”

Hodson-Turpin said more than 70 people own homes in Fairway Village.

“I don’t think they’re thinking of all the seniors and the new young families that are moved in here that need to get their homes either moved or bought at a fair price, not a secondary or third price thing,” she said.

“It should be a fair thing. If you want your land back, then you take care of us and help us move the proper way.”

The tenants of Fairway Village have until Jan. 31, 2028, to vacate the park.
