Manslaughter charge laid following fatal Manitoba assault: RCMP

Manitoba RCMP have charged a 46-year-old man in connection with a death earlier this month at a gathering southeast of Winnipeg, Man.

Mounties responded to the incident at a home just off Dawson Road in the RM of Ste. Anne on May 2 at 11:37 p.m.

They said a 49-year-old man, identified as Cameron Huley, suffered life-threatening injuries following an assault at a social gathering outside a home in the community. Huley later died in hospital.

RCMP began investigating the death as a homicide and on Tuesday, arrested a 46-year-old man.

Jeff Wyness, from the RM of Ste. Anne, has been charged with manslaughter. He was released with conditions with a pending court date.

RCMP allege Wyness and Huley did not know each other previously and were guests at the home at the time of the assault.

The charge has not been proven in court.

RCMP continue to investigate.

According to an obituary, Huley was a father to a son. He also leaves behind a loving family, including his mother, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and countless friends.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, the obituary said.

According to Huley’s personal website, he was a chef with more than 20 years of experience, representing Canada on the world stage in multiple international culinary competitions. He was also a volunteer firefighter and auxiliary constable in Ste. Anne, Man.
