In recent years, Canadian travel habits have shifted dramatically. The pandemic initially forced people to stay local, but now, political and economic pressures are solidifying that behaviour as more Canadians are choosing to explore their own backyard rather than head south of the border.

The shift in summer travel planning

When lockdowns froze international travel to a standstill, Canadians turned to staycations at home. Road trips and camping became popular as families sought safer, more flexible options, and as the world reopened, that trend didn’t fully reverse. While international travel is returning to pre-pandemic levels, a new set of concerns is keeping Canadians grounded at home, this time by choice.

The reasons for the change

A weak Canadian dollar, trade friction and the cost of living are three key reasons for a growing number of travellers to rethink travel to the United States. But what started with headlines triggering a ‘buy local’ movement has become more permanent, and is influencing consumer behaviour in meaningful ways.

Based on recent surveys, only one-third of Canadians had plans to visit the United States in 2025, and more than half of those have changed or cancelled their plans. Many won’t even consider returning until political conditions improve, signalling a deeper shift in how Canadians view cross-border travel. Instead, more people are turning their attention to domestic travel or seeking international destinations further afield.

Exploring the world at home

From the Pacific rainforests and open plains of the Prairies to the quaint rural villages of Quebec and the incredible friendliness of the Atlantic provinces, it’s not surprising that Canadians have more to discover by staying home. Atlantic Canada, in particular, has emerged as a favourite destination this summer, drawing visitors from across the country with its natural beauty, cultural experiences, and relative affordability.

And when it comes to exploring coast to coast, Canadians are walking the walk, with 69 per cent of Canadians saying they’ll explore their home province, while 44 per cent plan to visit other provinces and 10 per cent are considering a full staycation.

Road trips are particularly popular, with 82 per cent of Canadians planning one this summer. And of the road trippers, a remarkable 88 per cent say they’d rather stay in Canada than cross the border, while only eight per cent plan to road trip to the U.S.

Flight data also tells a compelling story. According to Statistics Canada, the first five months of 2025 saw a bump of 10 per cent in flights to overseas destinations over the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, bookings between Canada and the U.S. have contracted, falling by more than 70 per cent month over month through to September, according to OAG Aviation Worldwide.
