Hazardous roads, whiteouts prompt travel warnings in northern Ont.

Many areas of Timmins, Ont., are still buried in snow. The city’s mayor, Michelle Boileau, said it is going to take time before the city gets cleaned up.

“Because we really are trying to focus on where there’s the higher traffic, but it all will get done eventually,” said the mayor.

“So, they have put together the action plan to ensure that we can get ahead of this.”

Boileau added that public works crews have been on the job for the past four days straight.

“They really are the true heroes in all of this,” she said.

“The public works crews and our contractors have been going around the clock, nonstop since about Boxing Day – the day of the storm.”

The public work crews have actually helped about 18 ambulances since the storm began.

“Our crews were actually clearing road access for priority calls ahead of ambulances and then, of course, responding when an ambulance would get stuck,” said Boileau.

The storm forced the closure of many highways in the region, and the mayor said, despite some flight cancellations due to visibility, the airport was really the only way in and out of the city.

“I want to give a shout out to our airport crews who have been, ensuring that our main runway has been able to stay open,” said the mayor.

While there have been minimal delays at Victor M. Power Airport, parking is currently an issue. Some spaces have been plowed, but many remain obstructed by snow.

The city, in a social media post, has asked that people flying out should get dropped off if possible to alleviate the parking woes.

Many motorists got stuck around town, but Timmins police officials said they have no serious incidents to report.

“Actually, the calls for service have actually been slightly lower in the last three days; MVCs have actually been a little lower,” said Staff Sgt. Camile Camirand, with the Timmins Police Service.

“I think people realize the severity of this snowstorm.”

The police agency and other authorities are reminding residents that 911 is for emergencies only and not to request rides to work or for grocery deliveries.

In addition to navigating the snow-covered streets and sidewalks, this is the third day in a row, the city’s issued an extreme cold weather alert.
