Bear traps set up on public property in the Sault

The Ministry of Natural Resources has set bear traps on public property in Sault Ste. Marie after black bears were spotted near people during the day.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has set what they call ‘humane’ bear traps on public property in Sault Ste. Marie.

“The traps have been set due to public safety concerns related to bears being in close proximity to people during daylight hours,” Sault police said in a news release.

May pose a risk

“These traps are being used to safely relocate bears that may pose a risk to people and to support the animals’ welfare.”

Residents are being advised to stay away from the traps -- don’t “touch or interfere with any traps,” police said.

“Tampering with traps can create safety risks for the public, responding officers, and the animals involved. If you see a bear, keep your distance and call the Ministry of Natural Resources Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327.”
