Quebec to expand the Charles-LeMoyne Hospital in Longueuil with $670 million investment

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette is continuing to open the purse strings as elections approach, this time announcing a major investment to renovate the Charles-LeMoyne Hospital in Longueuil on Montreal’s South Shore.

The $672 million investment, of which $28 million comes from the federal government, will build six floors about the current emergency room

“Let’s not beat around the bush: the current hospital needs love—a lot of love—and that’s exactly what we’re going to give it. Some of these wings are in very poor condition. There’s also a lack of space. So, in concrete terms, what are we going to do? We’re going to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to expand and renovate Charles-LeMoyne Hospital,” said Fréchette.

Federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel, who was on hand for the announcement, pointed out that “in many regions, hospitals built in the 1970s now serve twice the population for which they were designed.” Charles-LeMoyne is even older than that: construction began in 1962, and the hospital opened in 1965.

Due to this major construction project, the emergency department will be temporarily relocated to another nearby clinic. Plans also include a new clinic, a new pharmacy, and a new intensive care unit that will combine respiratory therapy and instrument sterilization.

One of the most important elements of this renovation will be installing a PET scanner, a piece of equipment that will have a direct impact on patients, Fréchette pointed out, noting that this equipment “will allow us to detect cancers, heart disease, and brain disorders more quickly and easily throughout the region.” “And that will truly change the lives of thousands of people because, currently, someone on the South Shore battling cancer, for example—who is often already tired and worried, given that treatments are exhausting—still has to travel to the Island of Montreal for treatment. And that, I would say, adds to the hardships the person is already facing.”

The project is expected to create some 200 construction jobs.
