16-year-old charged after alleged high-value trading card theft

Police say a Facebook Marketplace meeting gone wrong has resulted in charges for a teenager.

Barrie police say they responded to a call for a theft of a high-value trading card on Tuesday in the southeast end of the city.

According to police, the suspect directed the card seller to meet at 6:30 p.m. outside of a home he claimed was his residence.

During the interaction, the suspect reportedly took several pictures of the collectible card and when the seller briefly diverted his attention, the suspect allegedly grabbed the card and took off on foot.

Police say thanks to video surveillance, they were able to identify the 16-year-old suspect and confirm that the meeting place was in fact not the suspect’s home.

When police arrived at his real home, the suspect answered the door, reportedly in the same outfit he was wearing in surveillance footage.

The youth was taken into custody and charged with theft over $5,000.

The card was returned to its owner.
