Nearly 16 per cent of Quebec teachers surveyed by a major teachers’ union federation said they were unlikely or unsure if they would remain in the profession over the next three years. The teachers who said they are considering leaving the profession are not exclusively younger educators, and the figure excludes those who said they plan to retire. The Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE), which represents about 60,000 elementary and secondary school teachers in Quebec, surveyed 2,400 of its members about what was keeping them in the profession. Some 93 per cent said they remained passionate about sharing their knowledge and inspiring students to learn. Another 83 per cent cited their relationships with young people. Overall, 77 per cent said they planned to remain in the profession. However, they expressed frustrations with a lack of access to services for their students, their workload and the composition of their classes.
