A dispute over a boat slip erupted into a bizarre scene at a Campbell River marina Tuesday when a suspect allegedly struck a man with a hatchet, injuring him.

Police say the argument started when the suspect found someone had moved his boat to another spot and placed their own boat in his slip.

The ensuing confrontation became physical, and the suspect swung a hatchet at the boat owner and his two friends, according to police.

The victim was taken to hospital where he had to undergo surgery to his hand Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect, a 47-year old Campbell River man, was taken into custody without incident on charges of assault with a weapon.

He made his first court appearance Wednesday morning.

Anyone with further information on the incident is asked to call Campbell River RCMP at 250-286-6221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
