Mounties say crimes of convenience are the “flavour of the day and night” on the mid-island with thieves targeting mailboxes and unlocked vehicles.

According to RCMP, many of the thefts in Chemainus, Duncan and regions in between happened overnight with no witnesses.

Police are asking the public to collect their mail daily, not to leave anything valuable in vehicles and to lock car doors. Drivers are also advised to park their vehicles in a well-lit area and to have an anti-theft device installed.

Anyone who is expecting mail and hasn’t received it is asked to contact Canada Post.

Mounties say they are investigating every theft reported to them.

“It is important that we know the time, location, and details of the crime committed against you to assist us in identifying those responsible,” said Cpl. Krista Hobday.

Individuals who want to report a theft can call North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
