The Northern Tornadoes Project has confirmed another tornado touched down in southwestern Ontario on Sept. 2. The latest confirmed tornado was reported just north of Wellesley. “The tornado has been rated EF1 based on the results of a damage survey that included parts of a barn roof being removed and thrown,” a news release from the Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University said. No injuries were reported, but hydro poles, trees and a “fabric-covered structure” in the Wellesley area were damaged when the storm moved through, travelling eastward. When Northern Tornadoes Project crews surveyed the damage on Sept. 6, they found the damaged barn near Weimar Line, a converted refrigerated trailer that had been moved by the storm and crops that had been flattened to the ground. They believe the tornado started near Manser Road around 5:25 p.m. “Damage assessed as EF1 tornado, with an estimated max. wind speed of 145 km/h, track length of 6.11 km and max. path width of 490 m,” a Northern Tornadoes Project summary said. Two other tornadoes and a downburst The latest report comes after the Northern Tornadoes Project already confirmed two tornadoes and a downburst moved through the Tavistock area that same day. The first tornado began west of Tavistock around 5:23 p.m. and was rated as an EF0, with an estimated maximum wind speed of 125 km/h. The second tornado happened near Shakespeare two minutes later and moved southeast. That storm was considered to be an EF1 event, with estimated maximum winds of 155 km/h.
