A fire at a southeast Calgary landfill has begun again, officials said Wednesday. The Calgary Fire Department said the blaze at Ecco Recycling has grown once more, despite the efforts of staff to fully snuff it out. “This morning at around 6:00am, fires ignited in several spots and fire began to actively spread throughout the piles resulting in heavy smoke conditions in the area,” the CFD said in a news release. “Calgary Fire has contacted contractors to bring in heavy equipment that will be able to safely move the piles of debris, and additionally, contracted dedicated fire suppression equipment and personnel.” Officials say the flames are limited to the piles of garbage, but smoke is again beginning to affect nearby communities. “Calgarians do not need to call 911 unless they observe fire spreading to other structures or areas. There are dedicated fire suppression teams on site, and an active response is in progress.” The fire at Ecco Recycling was first reported on Sunday, Sept. 6. Fire crews attended and extinguished the blaze by Monday evening and have since been at the scene to monitor the situation. Hazardous materials teams are working with Alberta Environment and have set up air monitoring equipment and the CFD is actively responding to the scene.
