St. Albert officially began work on its fourth fire station in the northeast end of the city on Tuesday. The new facility, which sits off St. Albert Trail and Neil Ross Road, is meant to enhance response times across the north end of the community. Development in St. Albert has increased response times and placed additional demand on existing fire halls, according to the city’s website. The project is expected to be done in 2028. “It’s the city’s responsibility to invest in assets and resources to ensure our first responders have the ability to serve our growing community,” St. Albert Mayor Scott Olivieri said. The two-storey fire station will include two double deep bays for fire equipment, firefighter/paramedia accommodations, a decontamination room and an administration space. It’s also the city’s first Green Globes building, which means it is slated to be built to high environmental sustainability, health and wellness standards. St. Albert council recently signed a new 2.5-year contract extension with the province’s Emergency Health Services to maintain its ground ambulance and fire model through 2029. Fire Hall No. 4 was approved in the 2020 municipal capital budget and is expected to cost around $26.5 million. The city purchased the land through its capital projects branch in 2021. The station is slated to be the first building in that area in need of further city servicing, including extra sanitary work. City council approved site zoning and servicing plans unanimously during a May 5 bylaw hearing.
