Extortion charge laid after family receives threats

An Edmonton man has been charged in connection to threats made to a local business and family.

The business owner contacted the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) on Aug. 27 after receiving threats from an unknown number on WhatsApp, police wrote in a release on Friday.

“The messages demonstrated detailed knowledge of the victim’s business and home address and included demands for a sum exceeding $100,000,” EPS said. “The sender claimed the victim was under surveillance and threatened to harm him and his family if the money was not paid.”

Davinder Singh, 42, was arrested on Sept. 5 and charged with extortion, EPS said.

Investigators seized two phones during the arrest.

EPS also offered a number of tips when people receive messages from unknown numbers, including not responding, sending money or meeting strangers in person.

“When you’re receiving threats—especially ones that include personal details or demands for money—it’s natural to feel fear and uncertainty. That’s exactly what these individuals are counting on,” Staff Sgt. Eric Stewart said.

“We want the public to know that you’re not alone in these situations. If something doesn’t feel right, report it. The sooner we become aware, the more we can do to help and hold those responsible accountable.”
