An in-custody death last month is under investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). Edmonton Police Service officers were called to a report of a man acting erratically, trying to enter homes, and damaging vehicles near Rapperswill Drive and 173A Avenue around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 16. An officer arrived on scene and ordered the man to get on the ground and handcuffed him without incident. According to ASIRT the man started struggling on the ground and bystanders held down his legs. The officer called for paramedics but the man became unconscious. An off-duty nurse on the scene started CPR on the man. The 54-year-old man was taken to hospital in serious condition. He died on Sept. 19. ASIRT is now examining the actions of police during the arrest. The team is tasked with investigating any incidents involving police involving serious injury or death.
