The warm air from last weekend and Monday has moved off to the east and although temperatures will get close to 20 Wednesday afternoon (and into the upper teens Thursday), there’s a definite cooling trend taking hold. That’ll REALLY take hold at the end of this week as an upper trough sweeps in with some much cooler air and a surface low pressure system brings some rain and gusty wind. We’re looking at a mix of sun and cloud for the Edmonton area through the day Wednesday. A few showers may pop up in the area late this evening or overnight, but no significant rain. Clearer skies in northwest Alberta may prompt a frost advisory for that region tonight. There may be a few sunny breaks early Thursday morning, but most of Thursday will be cloudy and temperatures should get to about 18 degrees for an afternoon high in Edmonton. We’ll start to see some rain in the Whitecourt/Edson/Jasper areas late Thursday, and there’s a chance for some scattered showers near or over Edmonton Thursday evening or late Thursday night. That rain zone pushes north by Friday morning and it looks wet for areas from Grande Prairie to Fort McMurray Friday morning. Edmonton and area should just be cloudy through most of the day Friday with an afternoon high in the mid teens. A low pressure system moves in from the southwest and it’s looking more and more likely that the heaviest, steadiest rain from that system will be in eastern Alberta from Fort McMurray south to around Lloydminster late Friday and through at least the first half of Saturday. There’s still some uncertainty with how much rain we’ll see in the Edmonton area. But, the most likely timing is Friday night through Saturday morning. Behind that system, we’ll get some gusty wind across much of the province on Saturday and a big drop in temperature. Edmonton’s looking at a high around 12 or 13 degrees and gusts in the 50-60 km/h range. The wind should ease through the day Sunday (although it may still be a bit blustery in the morning) and we’ll get some sunny breaks Sunday afternoon. Bottom line - Saturday’s looking to be the coolest day of the forecast periods, but we’ll only rebound to highs in the mid to upper teens in the Edmonton area for Sunday and next week (which is pretty close to average for late September.)
